Stewardship and Student Debt
Student debt is both an escalating crisis in the United States and a serious stewardship issue. Here’s a link to a detailed 16-page PDF report entitled “Student Debt and the Class of 2010.” This report, published by The Project on Student Debt (an initiative of The Institute for College Access and Success) provides some sobering facts and statistics–must reading for students and their families who are preparing for college or graduate school. As my church’s Stewardship Director I see first hand the onerous burden these student debts have become. I know members of our congregation that have $70,000 in student loans for the husband and wife. With the ever-worsening economy and job situation they honestly feel they will never be able to retire their student loans. Can we ever imagine two or three generations trying to retire the college loans of their parents?
Hi, James. Thanks for sharing your experience. There is a huge need for education surrounding student debt and how to avoid it. Blessings to you in your ministry as Stewardship Director!
