Sometimes you get a hint about how the Holy Spirit Works. And it is just
like the rustling of the wind.
A while back several of the needy people I help through money that
the church has raised for my discretionary fund helped me to see how hard it is
to turn your life around without a car. Homeless people and people
receiving welfare can get all the job training and all the help with dealing
with issues of addiction -- or whatever contributed to their situation -- but getting
and keeping a job in our society without a car is becoming harder and harder.
Bus routes dwindle because most of us have access to transportation.
About the same time that I was noticing this again, I was thinking about a
program in which old cars are fixed up and given to needy people who can take
them to work. This type of program has run successfully in other states, and
in Rhode Island and elsewhere it is called the Good News Garage. While all
this was going on, the head of the Good
News Garage contacted our dean and invited himself to a meeting of the clergy in
Rhode Island. So I already was seeing the Holy Spirit at work.
Just recently I read an article in the local paper about a woman who walked
five miles to work, all the while juggling care for several children of her own and some others.
From that article, calls and letters to help and a car came her way. I emailed the paper and congratulated them on the article and
suggested that her story was just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many in
a similar situation. I asked the newspaper to write about the Good News Garage, which they
did.
The same day I got a call from someone in the Department of Human Services
saying that they had been talking about the need for a program like this and
could we work together.
I cannot help but see the way the Spirit is working with so many of us to
help make something good happen for God's people.
It isn't even just about the cars. It is about people knowing that God
cares and that God's people care.
All we do is stay connected to the Spirit and we get to be part of this
great adventure of the Christian life.
I would love to hear your stories of the Spirit at work.
Lord, We thank you for your presence in our lives help
us always to hear and to follow. Amen.
